The Coca-Cola Pacific Regional Water Sustainability Roundtable was held in Shanghai on 12 May 2011, where it was announced that Coca Cola would contribute US $2 million to UNDP as part of their ongoing partnership on drinking water safety and water resource management in rural China. This high level event was attended by Ms. Silvia Morimoto, Deputy Country Director for UNDP China, who delivered a keynote speech on the work of UNDP in China, including the challenges that it faces, and the evolution of the unique public-private partnership that has existed between UNDP and Coca Cola since 2007.
In a critical era of climate change and environmental awareness, this occasion provided a timely boost to China's water management and climate change mitigation efforts. During which, Ms. Morimoto expressed her desire for UNDP to develop strong working relations with Coca-cola in order to develop a strong platform for broadening the scope of their work on biodiversity conservation, urban waste water usage and sustainable agriculture.
Having initially joined together under the Water Resources Management and Drinking Water Safety in Rural Regions of China project, UNDP China and Coca Cola have successfully overseen the introduction of ecologically sustainable agricultural water conservation technologies, community-based water treatment plants and school toilet facilities in Xinjiang, Sichuan, Heilongjiang and Liaoning provinces. Under the Guangxi Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative significant progress has also been made in easing the burdens placed on the drought-hit sugarcane farmers in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. More than 100,000 rural farmers have been provided with access to 500 million liters of water and this project is already well under way towards implementing the next phase of this four year programme.
