Launch of the China Volunteers Association

26 April 2011, Beijing China

The China Volunteers Association (CVA) was formally launched at a prestigious conference held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 26 April 2011. The event was attended by over 400 senior officials and several high profile dignitaries, including Mr. Zhou Tienong, President of CVA and Vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of 11th National People’s Congress and Chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK) Central Committee, Ms. Renata Dessallien, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in China. Representatives from UNV, government organisations and civil society were also present at this high level event to mark the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10).

Following a speech given by the Minister of Civil Affairs, Mr. Li Liguo, Ms. Dessallien congratulated Mr. Zhou for his instrumental role in establishing an inclusive volunteers association to coordinate volunteering activities at the national level and praised its mandate to foster a culture of volunteerism for social development in China. She also conveyed similar sentiments in a congratulatory message on behalf of UNV Executive Coordinator, Ms. Flavia Pansieri, acknowledging China’s unique volunteering spirit, expressing her admiration for the government’s vision of a Xiaokang Society and a more inclusive growth strategy, and pointing to volunteerism as a key pillar in China’s social development.

As such, both UNDP and UNV will work closely with the CVA in the future to consolidate volunteering efforts and to forge important development pathways that are equitable, sustainable and people-orientated.
