Chemicals management

UNDP partners with SEPA and local businesses to phase out the use of chemicals which have an impact on the global and local environment. These include toxic chemicals used as pesticides in the production of food in China. Special focus is placed on the elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like DDT and dicofol that are used in the farming and fishing sectors. UNDP will support efforts to prevent POPs from entering the food chain where they cause serious damage to ecosystem functioning and posing significant risks of cancer and other diseases to humans. Support will go towards improved regulatory and enforcement measures and identifying and introducing alternative chemicals which reduce the risk of ecosystem and human impacts while maintaining industry production, livelihoods and incomes.

UNDP also places top priority on the phase out of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) from key sectors such as the solvent sector. UNDP and SEPA work with hundreds of local enterprises to phase out ODS through introduction of new technologies and alternative chemicals, and with local governments on ways to improve ODS phase out enforcement and combating the emerging illegal trade of ODS.
