UNDP joins emergency relief efforts in Sichuan Earthquake
19 May 2008, Beijing — UNDP has allocated USD 100.000 for supporting emergency relief activities in response to the May 12 earthquake in southwestern China. These funds will be used for supporting coordination efforts, needs assessments and initiating early recovery framework.
To support local earthquake relief, UNDP China, along with the project partners--Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE) and The Coca-Cola Company, also provided urgent assistance with tents, medicines, food and drinking water valued RMB 100,000 to the quake affected areas under the joint Water Project in Chongzhou city of Sichuan Province. These emergency relief supplies will be shipped out today.
As China began a three-day national mourning from 19 to 21 May, UNDP China staff members today joined the Chinese people in observing three minutes of silence at 2:28 p.m. in the UN Compound in Beijing to grieve the victims of the massive earthquake.
The UN flag is being flown at half-mast in observance of the mourning.
