UNDP and Nokia Siemens Networks join forces for earthquake rehabilitation in China
Nokia Siemens Networks and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today entered into a partnership to support the recovery and reconstruction in the areas affected by Wenchuan earthquake

27 August 2008, Beijing – A memorandum of understanding was signed today at the UN’s Beijing office. The two parties will cooperate in the disaster rehabilitation and reduction as well as other activities that Nokia Siemens Networks excels in within the framework of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, e.g. environmental performance, improving access to education and connecting communities.
Nokia Siemens Networks will first make a donation of 600,000 RMB Yuan, starting with supporting the rebuilding of Nanba Primary School in Pingwu County, Sichuan Province, focusing on provision of teaching equipments, teacher training, psychosocial support and volunteer activities for teachers and students.
As a leading UN development agency in China, UNDP has responded to the earthquake immediately after the disaster by providing relief items. UNDP has also committed itself to support the recovery, reconstruction and longer run development work, building on its global experience and expertise.
With a proven track record in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Nokia Siemens Networks attaches great importance to social performance, and is dedicated to China’s long term development as a best partner. Right after the devastated earthquake in Sichuan, Nokia Siemens Networks initiated an emergency plan ensuring the emergent communications services. Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks have pledged a donation for earthquake relief immediately after the disaster and then moving to help in recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the community in the longer term.
The MOU marks another milestone of public-private partnership, as Nokia Siemens Networks becomes an important partner from the private sector that joins UNDP’s efforts in the post earthquake disaster recovery and reconstruction in China.
“This creative partnership will make possible the innovated interventions through multi-sectoral cooperation, by bringing together the development experience of UNDP, the commitment of Chinese government, and innovative force of Nokia Siemens Networks.” Said Subinay Nandy, the UNDP China Country Director at the MOU signing ceremony.
“The partnership will provide opportunity for Nokia Siemens Networks to demonstrate the great potential of the private sector to meeting the challenge of natural disasters in China, through enhanced public-private partnership.” Nandy added .
“As a world leading enabler of communication services, Nokia Siemens Networks sees CSR a part of its every day business. Nokia Siemens Networks is dedicated to the convergence of societal, environmental, and business benefits,” said Lauri Kivinen, the head of Corporate Affairs, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Based on our shared values in CSR, the Nokia Siemens Networks partnership with UNDP has great potential in fulfilling the social performance in our selected areas.”
Kivinen added that “We believe that telecommunications technology can unite communities and stimulate economic and social development. Our products can enhance productivity, provide for healthcare and forward education in the developing world. In partnership with UNDP, Nokia Siemens Networks hopes to engage more with social communities over the long term, rather than giving one-off donations. We are committed to contributing time and expertise to support community development.”
