In November 2005, UNDP and Arcelor formed a partnership in the area of energy & the environment, focused on private sector support to achieve China's goals of increasing energy efficiency. With the goal of quadrupling GDP by 2020, while simultaneously doubling energy consumption, China faces a major challenge to increase the efficiency of energy use in public and private sectors.
Arcelor makes a strong commitment to sharing best practices with local governments and companies on how they can achieve more efficient energy use. This includes support for UNDP programmes with the Government of China to strengthen energy conservation laws and regulations. With the Kyoto Protocol coming into effect in 2005, a major effort is also being undertaken to use the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to catalyze new private investments into renewable and energy-efficient technologies in China. By working with UNDP, Arcelor is able to participate in the emergence of this new CDM market in China, bringing win-win solutions to the energy & environment challenge.
